Club's tribute match for Brian Fisher
Newark Rugby Club will stage a special fixture on Saturday as a tribute to Brian Fisher, a former life member and president, who died in August.
The club’s first team will kick-off early at 2.15pm in their Midlands 2 East (North) match at Ashbourne to allow them to travel back to Kelham Road for the event.
The tribute match will feature a team of former internationals, led by England lock Simon Shaw, against an RAF Veterans team, kick-off 5.30pm.
Shaw is expected to be joined by fellow ex-internationals —wing Iain Balshaw, prop Kevin Yates and ex-Wales full-back Lee Byrne.
The squad is to be coached by Neil Back, the former Leicester flanker who played in the 2003 England World Cup-winning team.
President Alan Swain said: “We felt such a match was a fitting tribute to Brian, who was ‘Mr Newark Rugby’ for the way he helped lead the club over many years.
“Brian would be thrilled such an event was attracting such figures and also was a fundraiser for our new clubhouse.”
Admission is free. A special match programme will be on sale at £5.
