100 years of rugby celebrated at Southwell with former British and Irish Lions Geordan Murphy and Jason Leonard




A hundred years of rugby in Southwell will be marked on Saturday with a president's match and guest appearances by stars of the sport.

Commentary for the match at Park Lane (kick-off 2.30pm) will be provided by Geordan Murphy, a former Ireland and British and Irish Lions international.

A post-match celebrations then take place in the evening featuring former England and British and Irish Lions international Jason Leonard as guest speaker, along with Geordan Murphy.

"We are very excited about this weekend’s upcoming President's fixture where a past players team will take on the first team squad," said club chairman Andrew Smith.

"There will also be many ex-international players in attendance on the day."

Smith added the event would be a fitting start to the club's centenary celebrations.

Tickets are still available for the event by ringing Andrew Smith on 07859259420.

"The celebrations are sure to go well into the evening with a sit-down meal for 280 people following the game," said Smith.

Southwell first XV narrowly lost their opening season fixture at Ashbourne 25-15 in the Counties 1 Midlands East (North) Division.

The club said that the coaches were looking for a strong campaign for the 1sts and 2nds after a good showing in their pre-seasons.
