Wins in 21 out of 45 races helped Newark Swimming Club to victory in the fifth round of the Notts Sports Centre League Division Two.

Benjamin Palmer and Olivia Mathias won four races each as Newark moved up to first place in the league.

Newark were in second place going into the event at Carlton Forum, and got off to a good start when Benjamin Palmer won the 4x25 metres individual medley.

Olivia Mathias won two races, while Joe McCallion, Georgie Proctor, and Palmer picked up victories to put Newark in the lead after 12 races.

Sophie Trickett triumphed in the 50m breaststroke and Paolo Incerti grabbed his first win for Newark in the 50m butterfly.

Newark pulled away from their rivals, with Laura Cundy, Simon Wathen, Ruth Money, and Katie Mellors all tasting success in their races, before Mathias and Palmer won twice each to take their impressive tally to four wins on the night.

Jacob Carrington and new club swimmer Gregg Tejes won two races each, and Proctor secured her second success to put Newark firmly in the lead.

The swimmers did enough in the relays and 20x25m canon race to seal top spot, lifting them into first place in the standings before the final gala on home territory at The Grove Sports Centre, Balderton, tomorrow, starting at 6.30pm.

Newark need to finish in the top three at the Grove to win promotion to Division One.

Jacob Carrington won two races at the Water Meadows Gala, Mansfield, in the Nottinghamshire ASA Stage Three series, aimed at the bigger county clubs.

Carrington, who had already picked up silver in the relays, won the 100m individual medley and the 100m butterfly.

His success in the butterfly was made all the more sweeter after he improved his personal best time by five seconds.

Newark finished fourth behind Bramcote, Calverton and Bingham, and Ripley Rascals.

They recorded 16 personal best times from 29 races.
