Holy Trinity FC defeat Rose and Crown FC 2-1 in the final of the newark Alliance’s premier cup competition, the Willie Hall Cup

For the first time in the club's 46-year history, Holy Trinity are the Willie Hall Cup champions.

A week on from being runners-up in the Sam Arnold Memorial trophy, it was Marc Harvey's men's turn to lift the silverware as they beat Rose and Crown 2-1 in the Newark Alliance showpiece.

A crowd of 444 witnessed a hard-fought game that contained plenty of action for the fans.

Cal Barnes' Rose and Crown, who won the Premier Division title this season, came out strong but it would be Holy Trinity who opened the scoring.

The goal came thanks to a beautiful header from Tom Cowling that caught the Rose and Crown defence off guard.

Undeterred, Rose and Crown soon fired one back thanks to leading goalscorer Daryl Price.

Price – who has netted more than a goal a game this season – always looked a danger to Holy Trinity.

He almost claimed a second later in the game but was denied by a brilliant save from Holy Trinity's keeper Oli Swaby.

Both sides went into the half-time break at 1-1, determined to put the game away in the second-half.

Man-of-the-match Jordan Sowerby proved to be the difference as he slotted in what proved to be the winning goal for Holy Trinity.

Rose and Crown continued to press but the Holy Trinity side managed to hold the lead until full-time.

"It was a wonderful turnout on a beautiful day at Collingham yesterday," said Newark Alliance secretary Dennis Rawle.

"The match saw two of our Premier Clubs battle it out for the honour of winning our Willie Hall Cup Final which is the FA Cup of Newark.

"After heartbreak last week Holy Trinity managed to get their names on the Cup for the first time in the 55-year history of the Willie Hall.

"Hard luck to Rose and Crown, we are sure their time will come in the future.

"We would also like to congratulate the Rose and Crown on winning the Premier League title for the first time of playing in the division and we wish Holy Trinity all the best for their upcoming County Cup Final on Thursday at Basford against Poet Young Boys."

Holy Trinity had reached the final of the Willie Hall only once before, when back in 1988 they ironically lost by the same margin they won by against Rose and Crown.

"It was a brilliant day," said Holy Trinity manager Marc Harvey.

"I am really proud of the lads for the effort they put in, especially after last week's disappointment of losing the Sam Arnold Trophy.

"They bounced back and worked really hard in a tough game against Rose and Crown.

"Commiserations must go-to Rose and Crown, they have had an excellent season.

"This means a lot to the club — in our entire history we have never won this cup so it means the world."

Holy Trinity will now contest the Notts Sunday Senior Challenge Cup at Basford United FC against Poets Young Boys (Thursday, kick-off 7.45pm) in their last cup final of the season.
