Southwell City's record-breaking run comes to shock end at Ruddington Village in Notts FA Senior Trophy
Southwell City’s record-breaking winning-run came to an end on Saturday in the Notts Senior Trophy as lower league opposition Ruddington Village beat the Stripes 6-5 on penalties.
Southwell fell behind when an unmarked Ruddington forward converted from a corner for the Notts Senior League Division One side after 32 minutes.
Whatever City manager Jonny Upton said at half-time appeared to work as his side drew level on 49 minutes as Sam Johnson’s long throw into the box was finished by Fraser Bricknell.
The NSL Premier Division side could have taken the lead on 60 minutes as quick-fire chances fell to both Cal Law and Sam Robinson, but neither could force the finishing touch.
With 89 minutes played, the visitors had a final chance to win the game in normal time but Law fired over with City then bowing out of the county cup quarter-finals in the shoot-out.
Upton said it was an awful performance and a huge opportunity missed.
“We have to dust ourselves down and go again with four games in the next 13 days,” he said.
“The players have been great for months but they let themselves down today — a reaction is required.”
On Tuesday night, City lost 1-0 at Stapleford Town, their first league loss since September 3.
Upon said: “Loads of huff and puff from both teams and not much quality.
"Stapleford score with basically the only shot on target for both teams early in the first half.”
