Paul Halfpenny hailed his side’s efforts after Newark Ladies’ Hockey 1sts completed their pre-season schedule with a tough tournament at Wellingborough.
Newark travelled with a squad of 13 to take on teams playing up to two divisions above them, including Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham University.
In Newark’s final game, they led eventual winners Leamington 2-1 until the last minute when they gifted an equaliser.
Halfpenny said: “This was a top-class preparation. We had six 11-a-side games. On paper we were punching above our weight, but in reality we matched each team stride for stride.
“If I was to highlight performances it would be Laura Donaldson, who was outstanding in the midfield diamond, and youngster Emily Sanderberg, who stepped up her game in defence at this level.”
The team lost 4-0 to Matlock 1sts and beat Boots 2nds in other friendly matches.
Newark Ladies 1sts start their second season in the Midlands 2 to Beeston 3rds on Saturday (11.30am) at the Magnus Sports Centre.
p Becky Wells and Katie McMunn scored as a combined Newark ladies’ side beat Woodhall Spa 2-0.
Wells put the ball in the net but admitted it had touched her foot just before. That honesty was rewarded soon after when she slammed home after some fine inter-play.
McMunn doubled the lead minutes later after a fine cross from Terri McLeod.
Newark Mens 1sts were beaten 6-0
when they hosted Beeston 2nds, who play in a higher league.
Newark begin their campaign in the East Midlands 2 at home to Leicester Westleigh on Saturday (1.30pm).
