Boxer Tom Cowling passes toughest test yet to go 3-0-0 after Lewis van Poetsch points win at Newark Showground
Tom Cowling dug deep as he made it through his toughest test yet, beating the experienced Lewis van Poetsch at Newark Showground on Saturday night.
The points win on Carl Greaves Promotions Cracking Prospects saw Cowling’s record improve to 3-0-0 (1) after an impressive second round TKO on his debut in March and a points’ win in Leicester just over a month ago.
“It was a hard-fought win against a tough and durable opponent,” said Cowling.
“He has bags of experience and over 100 fights, so it was a good learning fight for me.”
Cowling started the night on top, showing good variation in his shots.
The crowd, feeding off the Newark fighters confidence in the ring, supported in song, and it helped spur Cowling on as he overcame a tricky third round.
In the fourth Cowling applied further pressure, searching for the stoppage, but, to his credit, the Gloucestershire-based van Poetsch fought smartly to reach the final bell.
“It’s been a frustrating year due to injury, but also a successful one, winning my first three fights while dealing with the injury,” Cowling said.
“Moving into 2020 I’m looking to build on my unbeaten record and put some good performances in.
“I’m only going to get better with age.”
Trainer Greaves said the best is yet to come for the 23-year-old, having battled back injuries throughout his first full year as a pro.
“We will see a special talent,” Greaves said. “He’s very good, has great balance and mixes his shots up well.
“He can change the tempo and he hits hard.”
