Reece Mould and Martin McDonagh WBA Continental Lightweight Championship fight called off, meaning Emma Dolan versus Nicola Hopewell’s Commonwealth title fight now headlines the GBM Sports’ promoted Clash On the Court boxing event in Sheffield
Newark’s Emma Dolan now tops the billing at tonight’s Clash On The Court boxing event following the cancellation of the headline bout.
The main event was to be the first title defence of the WBA Continental Lightweight Championship belt, but that has fallen through at the eleventh hour fallen through because the challenger has withdrawn due to a medical condition.
The bout between Emma Dolan who will be defending her Commonwealth title, and Worksop's Nicola Hopewell, now tops the bill at the event in Sheffield.
The East Midlands derby sees Dolan in her first title defence after defeating Halima Vunjabei in March.
The WBA Continental Lightweight Championship belt bout was called off after challenger, Kent's Martin McDonagh withdrew from the fight following last-minute medical advice.
Doncaster star Reece Mould was due to make the first defence of the title against McDonagh in the inaugural event at the opening of the brand-new Canon Medical arena.
Dolan's Commonwealth Super-Flyweight title defence against Hopewell, had been the chief supporting contest to Mould-McDonagh.
The rest of the undercard remains the same.
Promoter Izzy Asif, the chief executive of GBM Sports, said he understood the importance and confidentiality of McDonagh’s medical condition and fully supported his decision.
“Our first thought, of course, is with Martin and for his health and safety," said Asif.
"It’s disappointing to lose what would have been a great fight between Reece and Martin but a boxer’s health is paramount in our sport.
"In the Commonwealth Title showdown between Emma and Nicola we had a show topper in its own right and that will be the headliner for tonight and the rest of the lads’ on the undercard still get to fight.”
Due to the late nature of the withdrawal, the deadline to have a suitable replacement approved had passed.
Having prepared for a Championship contest, Mould opted against taking part in an eight-round bout and decided to also pull out of the event.
