Double drama as Southwell City take four points from top-five double-header against Woodthorpe and Keyworth respectively

Southwell City returned to winning ways in an eventful six-goal thriller against title rivals Woodthorpe on Saturday, before sharing the points with league leaders Keyworth United in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday evening.

City went into Saturday's Notts Senior League Premier Division game following back-to-back defeats, but their confidence wasn’t knocked as they took a fourth-minute lead when Ben Selby dribbled from halfway before finishing through the ‘keeper’s legs.

A crazy 40 seconds after the half-hour mark saw the visitors equalise and then take the lead, but City retaliated before the break through Cal Law’s penalty after Selby was fouled in the box on 40 minutes.

Will Stocks, who was man of the match on Saturday.

In the 70th minute, Selby then set up Liam Moran as City regained the lead.

It was then Moran’s turn to provide the goals next as he found Law with a pin-point cross. Law made no mistake as he fired into the top corner.

Southwell manager Jonny Upton said: “It was a great win after going behind to two goals in 40 seconds.

“After a tight first half, we controlled the second and it was a great game for the neutrals.”

Away to Keyworth, City went one-nil down inside the opening ten minutes as both centre halves were drawn to a long ball.

Having lost the initial flick, Callum Wolloch ran clear to finish past Ryan Fletcher in the City goal.

City thought they had equalised when Law finished on 29 minutes, only to be met by the linesman's flag.

Selby then struck the bar as City applied pressure before the break.

Though, they had to wait until the 67th minute to pull level, but it was a goal worth waiting for as Selby found Moran, and the latter headed home.

Selby then combined with Stocks eight minutes later as the winger fired into the near corner to give the visitors the lead.

Matthew Hopewell spoiled the Southwell party though as his header with minutes to go levelled the tie.

And it nearly went from bad to worse for City who were saved by the offside flag minutes later as Keyworth had the ball in the back of the net.

The late drama continued into the 93rd minute — and the last kick of the game — as Southwell's Fenn Radford's thunderous effort bounced off the crossbar.

In his post-match notes, Upton said: "What a game. Keyworth edged the first in chances but we should’ve been out of sight in the second half.

"We hit the woodwork twice too.

"We missed lots of chances and lots of odd decisions.

"Great game for the neutral."

On Saturday, the drama continues as Southwell host Sandiacre (3pm).
