Newark Town will host Harrowby United in the United Counties League Division One on Saturday(kick-off 3pm) and plan to show their respect prior to the game for Mr Newark Town, Mark Nesbitt.
Their last game against Safron Dynamo was called off due to poor weather.
Newark Town are currently exceeding expectations in the United Counties League Division One and have thrilled crowds by playing attacking, entertaining football.
Captain Lewis Chambers is only a handful of goals from setting his club’s goal scoring record and he realistically could achieve the feat next game as he only needs three.
Pre-match there will be a minute of applause to reflect on the great work and dedication of the club coach Mark Nesbitt.
The club is hoping to see a strong crowd down for the match to commemorate the popular coach who recently died.
In 2017 Mark Nesbitt founded a Girls Development Centre (GDC) at Newark Town FC to encourage girls to ‘have a go’ at football.
This was to set the foundations and the standard for girls’ football in Newark.
Fast forward to 2023 and the GDC is still going strong and is back with a new year and a new purpose to carry on Mark’s vision of giving young ladies a platform to enjoy the game, make friends, keep active, and have fun.
The success of the Lionesses in the Euros has accelerated interest in the female game as more and more girls continue to show an interest.
Sarah Robinson, speaking on behalf of the club, added: “We are encouraging new faces to join our current group of girls and to help spread the word as female football is only going to get bigger and better locally.
“The GCD is held every Sunday at Devon Park from 11am-12.30pm with the first session being free, and £3.00 thereafter.
“Any girl joining us can choose to just participate every Sunday or if they want to join a team, we can make that happen as well.”
The success of the Ladies’1st team is a testament to the foundation the club provides to girls’ football through the girl’s development centre as many in that team knew Mark well.
The Newark Ladies are currently topping Division Two of the Nottinghamshire Girls and Ladies Football League with dominating performances. The Blue Army currently has four of the top ten goal scorers in the league.
GXO, the home kit sponsor for the Newark Town FC Ladies Team, made a sweet gesture over Christmas by donating a selection box to each player in the Girls Section, which was much appreciated by the club.
The initiative was instigated by Karolina Wielgos, an employee at GXO who also plays for the Ladies Team.
The side next plays local rivals Bingham Town Ladies at home this Sunday (kick-off 2pm)
