Caunton Tennis Club girls ace county cup qualifiers with home court advantage
A tennis team with local talent will represent the region at the national finals this weekend.
Caunton Tennis Club held a qualifying group for the 14 and under Girls County Cup at the beginning of this month, which saw team from five counties travel to play in the two-day event.
The Nottinghamshire team, which included Caunton’s Sophie Lager and Isabella Smillie, put in a great performance, winning all of their matches and progressing to the county cup final.
Caunton coach and team captain Zef Antonio said: “With Isabella playing up an age group and Sophie playing as the number one seed, the girl’s contribution to Nottinghamshire became clear after taking home the gold medal.”
Sophie won six of her eight matches while Isabella won four of her five.
“They both played their best tennis against each and every county, showing resilience, drive and emotional control to overcome their toughest matches,” said Zef.
The national final will be held at Nottingham Tennis Centre on from May 13.
