Southwell Golf Club and Newark Golf Club launch season with Captains’ Drive-in
Two of the district’s biggest golf clubs have marked the start of the season with their Captains’ Drive-in, raising hundreds of pounds for charity in the process.
Southwell Golf Club and Newark Golf Club have held their respective Captains’ Drive-In.
Southwell’s event was followed by a well-attended Pairs Betterball competition.
The three incoming captains started proceedings with Paul Wilson (club captain) Jayne Bingham (lady captain) and Stephen Perchal (seniors captain) hitting ceremonial drives from the tenth tee in front of the membership.
Neil Dodd and Lottie Wright won the mixed competition with an excellent score of 44 points, while Andy Duckmanton and Mike Jenkins took the honours in the men’s competition with 42 points.
Newark held its 120th Captains’ Drive-In. Eighty players took part in a captains versus vice-captains match.
Howard Roberts, Newark’s club captain, saw his team see off Michael Carmen’s team 13-7.
Roberts said: “Alex and his ground staff team had done an excellent job preparing the course for the event.
“I’d like to thank everyone who took part, including the nine past captains and the ladies. “
He also thanked the six players who stepped in at short notice because of covid-19 cases.
The event was followed by the captains’ charity raffle, which raised £340 on the day for Emmaus Trust Newark.
