Gordon Whelbourn Week: Dozens of runners take part in Newark Athletic Club event

A total of 35 runners completed five races in five days for the annual Gordon Whelbourn Week.

The event, organised by members of Newark Athletic Club, drew more than 80 runners to one or more of the races.

The 35 who completed all five races ran around 30km throughout the week, including 10km on the last day.

Races were held at Sconce and Devon Park, Flowserve Sports and Social Club, Farn–don Riverside Park, and the Grove Leisure Centre.

The series is in memory of former club stalwart Gordon Whelbourn, and Dr Simeon Hansard, a member who died while racing in a triathlon.

There was never any doubt about who would win the series, the only question was how much Adam Holland, of Newark, would win by.

Holland, who ran ten marathons in as many days in May, finished first in all five races.

His overall time was 1-44-15, earning him the Dr Simeon Hansard Trophy by a margin of more than nine minutes.

Multi-sport athlete Holland, who also plays for Newark Hockey Club, said: “As a whole this event has been really good.

“Day three was the hardest because the weather was very warm and it was hard to judge how far left there was to run.”

Paul Butcher, of Mansfield Harriers, was second in the 10k race while Adam Rybak (unattached) came third.

Newark Athletic Club’s Howard Leek was second overall in the series with Nigel Watkin, of Southwell Running Club, third.

Jackie Duers, of Southwell Running Club, won the Mary Whelbourn Trophy in the ladies’ category, finishing in 2-32-45.

Craig Fisher, of Claypole, celebrated his 21st birthday during the week.

The Newark Athletic Club member said: “I postponed my celebrations until the weekend since I was running in the Gordon Whelbourn. It’s the fourth time I’ve done the event. It’s a test of endurance.”

Chris McDonnell, 54, of Syerston Way, Newark, who runs for Notfast Running Club, said: “I’m a very keen runner and this is a good challenge.”

Event organiser Rob Orgill said: “Numbers were up a little on last year. There’s nothing in the Midlands which comes close to a series like the Gordon Whelbourn.

“People who are unable to run because of injuries or other reasons often come along voluntarily to help out too.”

Money raised will go to New–ark Community First Aid, who provided medical staff for the week, and to the athletic club.
