Hard work recognised by Newark Rugby Club's chairman Dave Duddles

The chairman of Newark Rugby Club says the senior section is thriving despite the implications of the pandemic.

Club chairman Dave Duddles addressed the club’s situation following the first team’s outing at Loughborough.

He said: “On the playing front our 1sts are having an excellent season and sit in fifth place.

“We, like many other clubs, are finding it difficult to maintain three senior sides every week.

“Covid has taken its toll on players’ availability in the last two years.

“However, our playing committee works endlessly week-in, week-out to get games for as many players as possible.

“We now have the bonus of working with the RFU rule change, which allows our 17-year-old colts to play senior rugby.

“Transitioning these young players at the right time is so important.

“To this end our senior coaches have been working very closely with our colts’ coaching team to make sure that this is done correctly.”

Duddles thanked the coaching team, Tim Barker, Richard Byrom, Ben Wells and Rowen Allen for their efforts so far.

The youth section has also enjoyed success and the club has secured connections with 14 primary schools ahead of its third Kelham Road festival on March 17.

“This significant investment is helping our mini, youth and girls’ sections to buck the national trend,” said Duddles.

“Our membership has seen an 10% increase this season and at an all-time high with over 440 registered members.”
