Lincoln United defeat visitors Newark Town in their second cup tie 4-1, this time in the United Counties League cup despite The Blues challenging the home side’s goal on several occasions




Despite a valiant challenge, a side lost again to higher-ranked competition for the second time in as many weeks.

Newark Town travelled to Lincoln United for the second week in a row for another cup tie, this time losing 4-1.

The score was not an accurate reflection of the game with The Blues having more chances on goal but mistakes at the back proved costly for the visitors.

Fresh off the back of a penalty shoot-out loss against Lincoln United in the FA Vase, the Blues were down a few prominent players including Sam Bartle, George Asplin, Jackson Buckthorp, and club captain Lewis Chambers.

The United Counties League Cup fixture got off to a fast start with Lincoln United netting early.

The home side took the lead in the fourth minute as Jack Mcmenemy hit a powerful shot into the net from ten yards out.

Jammy Lloyd showcased a good work rate as he regularly put pressure on the home side and recent signing Tyler Smith also displayed high levels of quality in attack for the visitors.

However, despite some good displays, Lincoln United were the team that managed to find the net more often.

The step five team play in the United Counties League Premier Division North competition while Newark Town play in the league’s step six division one contest.

Lincoln United lost Sean Wright to the sin bin in the 30th minute which temporarily reduced The Whites to ten men.

In the 40th minute, Jack McGovern doubled the lead for The Whites as he scored in the latter stages of the second-half putting the ball into the top right corner of the net and beating Byron Musgrove.

There was hope for The Blues in the form of a response from Lucas Cotterill that saw the attacking powerhouse round a defender, beat the keeper, and hit a beautiful shot into the top left corner.

The teams came off the field at 2-1 in front of 111 people at Ashby Avenue.

The second-half saw Newark Town challenge the opposition's net on several occasions but it would be The Whites who would capitalise on their opportunities as they scored two further goals before the full-time whistle.

McGovern got his brace in the 62nd minute as he slotted in his side's third of the night.

Musgrove made some big saves for The Blues to keep them in it and down the other end Lincoln United's keeper had to reciprocate to stop Newark Town's attacking efforts.

Elliot King and Shemar Pettet both challenged the Lincoln United keeper but The Whites held firm at 3-1.

Tobias Liversidge put the final nail in the coffin in the sixth minute of injury time to put the result beyond doubt and give the home team a 4-1 victory when the final whistle was blown.

Newark Town will now take on Saffron Dynamo in the league at YMCA Activity VIllage on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
