Newark Hockey Club men's 3rd team await promotion after first draw of the season

Promotion celebrations were cruelly put on hold after Newark Hockey Club men’s 3rds drew for the first time this season.

Newark went 1-0 down following an early penalty corner in their 2-2 draw with North Notts, which saw them come from behind before losing their lead.

Craig Joynes placed the ball into the right corner from close range after a string of efforts from various Newark players, before Tom Shaw fired the Magnus-based side ahead with a coolly swept effort across goal.

The second half equaliser means Newark need to win one of their final two games to seal promotion.

Having won their second game of the season last time out, Newark men’s 2nds were brought back down to earth in a hard-fought fixture at Beeston 6ths.

Despite David Henderson’s effort, Newark were 3-1 losers on the day.

Both the ladies’ 1sts and ladies’ 2nds shipped seven goals in respective 7-1 and 7-0 loses to Loughborough Town and Aztecs.

However, the scoreline flattered the opposition in both matches.

The ladies’ 4th were 5-3 winners at Redhill, which boosted their league position as the season comes to a close.

Newark got off to a flyer after goals from sisters Georgia and Jess Sheldon.

Georgia got her second soon after and Elsa Hull joined her on the scoresheet, converting a fantastic cross from outside the D.

Redhill fought back in the second period, but a late Hull goal cancelled any thoughts of a comeback.
