It is the second Olympic medal for McCallin, from Dry Doddington, who won gold in Rio 2016.

Shona’s mum, Wendy, told the BBC she waited up until the early hours of the morning to watch the match.

Wendy said: “We tried to get a bit of sleep but that really didn’t happen, so the double Olympian is still sinking in.

“I’m just so proud of the girls, the word battle describes it, they battled, it was fantastic.”

Adam Dixon, from Newark, captained the men's hockey side.

The former Newark Hockey Club youth star announced he retired following GB’s loss to India in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
