Former Newark Hockey Club star Adam Dixon has helped England reach the semi-finals of the Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands.

Dixon missed England’s first game in the tournament, a 1-1 draw with Spain, but returned to the side in their wins over India (2-1) and Malaysia (2-0).

The team suffered a dent in their bid to go through to the semi-finals when they were beaten 5-0 by Australia, but secured their place in the last four with a narrow 3-2 win over Belgium.

Belgium took the lead thanks to Thomas Briels’ strike after 14 minutes. Nick Catlin and Ashley Jackson scored in each half to put England ahead but Dixon’s side was pegged back when Tanguy Cosyns netted. Just when it looked like being heartbreak for England, Iain Lewers converted a late penalty flick to put them into the last four.

England play their semi-final match against hosts Netherlands tomorrow (5pm).
