Ladies hit 115-year high
Newark Hockey Club Ladies’ 1sts have secured the Midlands feeder league title and promotion to the Midlands Division Two — the highest position the club has ever been at in its 115-year history.
They were crowned champions despite a 2-1 defeat at West Bridgford on Saturday after results elsewhere went their way.
A 2-2 home draw to Boots 2nds on Sunday ensured the ladies continued their unbeaten home record, which stretches from March 7, 2009.
Coach Paul Halfpenny, said: “We have created club history by reaching the highest level of hockey in Newark’s 115 years as well as maintaining our record of not losing a league game at the Magnus since 2009.
“Many thanks to the huge number of supporters who shared our celebrations and to the team who have worked tirelessly this season, especially captain Sarah Pask who even re-scheduled a family holiday not to miss a game.
“Minds on Saturday were on the promotion parties not on the game and it showed.
“Overall it was a disappointing game but a lesson to the team not to celebrate until we have something to celebrate.”
Newark fell behind early against relegation-threatened West Bridgford but levelled through Megan Beard.
But needing a win to secure their league status, the home grabbed a vital goal with eight minutes left.
On Sunday, Newark’s Hannah Coe broke the deadlock in style, finishing off a slick move started by Beard.
Boots equalised on 55 minutes but three minutes later Newark’s lead was restored through Nicola Jenner.
A penalty corner seven minutes from time secured a draw for Boots 2nds.
