Ladies off the mark in new league

Newark Hockey Club ladies’ 1st XI gained their first point in the Midlands League after a thrilling 1-1 draw at home to Barton.

Newark started brightly as usual, but were soon matched by a young Barton side who forced a penalty corner after just four minutes.

The hosts’ defence held firm and on 11 minutes a forceful run by Sarah Pask opened up the Barton defence, creating a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only for her shot to slip past the post.

The game was now end to end, but the well-organised Newark defence snuffed out any threats. The home side took the lead on the half hour mark when Pask once again broke away and slipped the ball through to Megan Beard who coolly smashed it home.

The second half was just as exhilarating, but this time it was Newark who had the upper hand, with player of the match Emma Wilson and Emma Sanders causing constant problems for the Barton defence.
