Ladies up to second

The Newark Hockey Club ladies’ 1st XI moved into second spot in Midlands League Feeder East with a 5-1 win at Kettering — despite missing five players through illness or injury.

When star striker Emma Wilson called in ill at lunchtime, it meant that Newark travelled with a minimum 11, but the players stood up to be counted in the game and produced a terrific performance.

Nic Jenner gave Newark the lead from a penalty corner, and goals followed from Megan Beard (2) Jaz Bixley and Emma Sanders.

Coach Paul Halfpenny said: “When Emma let me know she was too ill to travel, I must admit I had the glass half-empty feeling, instead of half-full.

“But the players were tremendous. I felt the youngsters in particular were outstanding, possibly the best I have seen of them collectively.

“Each of the 11 players gave 100% and thoroughly deserved their win.”
