Heanor Town 3-2 Newark FC: Late Jamie Sleigh goal ruins the Highwaymen's comeback plans

Newark FC nearly completed a fantastic second-half comeback at Heanor Town last night, but for an 87th-minute Jamie Sleigh goal.

The Highwaymen, who went into the UCL North Premier fixture following back of back-to-back league wins, suffered a torrid start, going one-nil down after three minutes through Lewis Rourke's header.

The hosts went on to double their advantage midway through the first half with another header, this time Sleigh found himself free in the box for his first of the day.

Newark, who continued to battle despite the scoreline, pulled level through Josh Mundell following a strong start to the second half.

Mundell then turned provider as he created space and picked out Sean Devlin, who finished for Newark.

With the score level and ten minutes to play, Newark 'keeper Sam Andrew pulled off a double save to prevent the hosts from killing his side's momentum.

His save, which boosted spirits, saw Newark go close minutes later as Isaac Currie stormed down the other end and produced a bit of trickery to make a chance for himself, but his effort went over.

With just three minutes of normal time left it looked as if Newark were destined for a late winner, but Sleigh ruined the Highwaymen's comeback plans with a late winner for Heanor.

Newark travel to Heather St. John's on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
