Newark Rugby Club get a good win against tough opponents and Southwell Rugby Club also get victories with their top two sides in Nottinghamshire




Newark Rugby Club got back to their winning ways after a break due mainly to flooding with a whole-hearted effort which saw them secure a 42-27 win over Melbourne.

The Regional Two North Midlands clash saw a good crowd watch the two sides battle it out on a soft pitch at Kelham Road in Newark.

Will Britten’s team defeated their opponents by six tries to five.

It wasn't just a triumph on the field with a lot of hard work being done by club staff and volunteers just to get the pitch and

clubhouse is back in use after another flood put the site underwater.

On the pitch, a reshuffled team proved itself, led by an assured display at fly-half from George Leeson.

He kicked 12 points and kept Newark going forward.

Newark will now break for the holiday period and resume league fixtures on Saturday, January 6 at Paviors, (kick-off 2.15pm).

The 2nds went down to league leaders Kestevan 42-5 on the road in what was always going to be a tough challenge for the side.

On boxing day Newark will hold a president's match kicking off at noon.

Overall, Southwell Rugby Club had a strong weekend with their 1sts winning 45-8 at home against Boston and the 2nd team getting a 34-15 victory at Melbourne.

The Bandits, Southwell's 3rds narrowly missed out with a 19-17 loss against Paviors Horns.
