Hard-fought draw for 1sts

Newark Hockey Club returned to league action following a lengthy post season break.

After a successful fixture-filled September of pre-season matches for both the men’s and ladies’ side, competitive hockey returned in a busy weekend for Newark.

The men’s 1sts avoided defeat in their season opener, drawing 1-1 Boots 3s.

Newark youngster Ryan Foster opened the 1sts scoring campaign while an impressive performance by fellow youngster Emil Lineiwicz was rewarded with the man of the match award.

The men’s 2nds started their season against North Notts and got off to a brilliant starting, racing to a 2-1 lead with goals from Andrew Tallis and Josh Kent.

However, a late Notts comeback saw two-quick fire goals as the visitors snatched a last-minute victory.

The men’s 3sts lost 4-0 to West Bridgford, despite a good team performance that saw Newark split the man of the match award.

The Ladies’ 1sts fought back to draw 1-1 at Ashbourne.

A tough first match saw a Newark goal disallowed in the first-half, but the players continued to battle and Sarah Park pulled a goal back.

Hannah Beckett’s performance did not go unnoticed as she picked up the player-of-the-match award.

The ladies’ 2nds lost 2-0 to Worksop and the ladies’ 3rds lost 2-1 at home to Notts Players.

Ellie Smith scored an impressive goal with a flick from a penalty corner and a wealth of promising skills were shown by many youngsters playing full-pitch ladies’ hockey for the first time in the 3rds fixture.
