Newark overcome frost and league leaders

An excellent performance helped Newark claim the scalp of league leaders Chesterfield, with a 2-1 win.

Despite a frosty start on Saturday, the pitch passed a pitch inspection.

Newark created several early chances but were unable to finish them.

They went ahead through an effort from Tom Broome, who fired home following good work from the midfield.

Newark looked to build on the lead and created several more chances that weren’t converted. Simon Higgs and Harry Beedham both missed good opportunities.

The home side continued to dominate while the defence of Craig Brookes, Ben Brown, James Barker and Simon Sloan worked hard to stifle the Chesterfield attack.

With the last touch of the first-half, the visitors equalised. A well-taken drag flick left keeper Tom Shaw with no chance.

Newark increased their intensity at the start of second-half and took a deserved lead when Tom Broome got on to the end of a well-placed ball before beating the keeper.

They put in a strong defensive performance and kept their discipline to inflict their opponents’ first loss of the season.

The better of the early chances fell to Newark, with Becky Wells hitting a fiercely struck shot from the left of the D that was well saved.

Beeston began to make some quick breaks and Newark keeper Georgia Barratt produced a stunning reaction save to keep the scores level

Newark’s defence held firm and they could have taken a half-time lead when Shanade Orsmond swept a shot an inch past the post.

Barratt made a number of impressive saves at the start of the second-half as Beeston began to dominate.

She was finally defeated with less than ten minutes left. A rebound from a parried save was nudged into the corner of the net.

Newark went agonisingly close to levelling just before the end when Amy Baugh’s lifted shot swatted away by the keeper.

Chesterfield 3rds 0 Newark Mens 3rds 3A strong display of passing allowed Newark gain a third victory in a row when they beat Chesterfield.

Their defensive play proved solid, with Rob Browne, Jack McMunn and Adrian Smith denying their opponents on numerous occasions.

Despite dominating, Newark had to be patient to find their opener, Robbie Pearce netting following some neat interplay.

They continued to press and Ollie Ratcliffe doubled their advantage before the break with a confident finish.

Joe Carrington scored a third in the second-half after several attacks on the Chesterfield goal.

The team was in fine form throughout, with Josh Dent unlucky not to add to the scoreline with a dominant display.

Newark Mens 4ths 4 West Bridgford 9th 0 Newark beat the frost as they easily overcame West Bridgford 9ths.

James Beedham, Sam Fosckett, John Cooke, Andrew Tallis were the scorers in a competitive match up.
