Newark Rugby Club 1sts lost 21-10 to Coalville Rugby Club in the second-round of the RFU Intermediate Cup
Newark 1sts suffered a second-round defeat in the RFU Intermediate Cup, as they lost 21-10 away to Leicestershire side Coalville.
The loss means the 1sts have suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season.
Newark had an excellent opportunity to reach the third-round of the national competition after racing to a 10-0 lead on a hot October day.
However, a lack of cutting edge in the remainder of the tie turned out to be Newark’s down fall.
Full-back Alex Scott, in his first league game of the season, was one of the new faces in a team that saw only eight players remaining from the starting XV at Lincoln the previous Saturday.
There was also a full senior debut for winger James Harding, who plays for the Colts side.
A great start saw Newark go over twice in quick succession, and take their lead to 10-0 on the ten-minute mark.
Wing Rhys Overland, on his first senior start of the season, scampered down the right for a try in the first minute, in what was a relentless start to the game from Newark.
Prop Mason Coulam went down for the away sides second, as Coalville looked to be in for a tough afternoon.
Coulam’s try came from crisp attacking play, which saw him race onto Matt Cox’s chip, before going over to the side of the post.
But the hosts proved to be a spirited outfit and fought back to score just before half-time, when Newark had lost back-rower Logan Watt to the sin bin.
Coalville grabbed their second converted try five minutes after the interval and took a four-point lead, with the majority of the second-half to play.
Newark’s spirited supporters did everything they could to spur the side on, however Coalville went down for their third try, following a pacey counter-attack.
Newark’s downfall was made worse by injuries to debutant Alex Scott and prop Jordan Hempstead, who were both forced off.
Saturday see’s Newark return to Midlands Two East North action as they face Long Eaton at Kelham Road (3pm).
Southwell 1sts also return league action on Saturday. They face Dronfield at Park Lane.
Newark 2nds failed to build on their impressive home win over Lincoln as they were convincingly beaten by Notts Medics in the league.
The 2nds welcomed Notts to Kelham Road but the visit quickly turned sour for Newark as they went into half-time with an unfavourable task at hand.
Notts continued their first-half performance and the match ended 53-0 in their favour.
Southwell 2nds beat Newark 3rds 59-12 in a friendly.
Newark Vets started their season with a convincing win, beating Hykeham 45-7
Bingham Town edged past Ashfield 2nds 16-7 in the security plus pennant league thanks to a great kicking performance from Will Packer.
Packer fired two first-half penalties to give the home side a 6-0 lead at the break.
In the second-half, the hosts survived an onslaught of Ashfield attacks as Bingham’s Pete Coppack and Adam Deal stood firm.
Jack Barnard went over for a converted try, before Packer hit his third penalty, to give the hosts a 16-0 lead.
The visitors eventually went over when they stole possession on the five-metre line, however, it was nothing more than a consolation.
