Anstey Nomads 3-0 Newark FC: No way back for Highwaymen against late-blooming Anstey
Newark FC suffered a 3-0 defeat at Anstey Nomads on Saturday, in what was the club’s final away league game of the season.
The Highwaymen, who are without a win in six, enjoyed a promising start to the United Counties League fixture, and should have taken the lead on 34 minutes when Joshua Lawe finished a sweeping counter-attack. Though, his effort struck the side-netting.
Having failed to capitalise on their dominance, Paul Rawden’s side conceded three second-half goals.
Two goals inside nine minutes at the hour mark moved the game out of sight.
The first came courtesy of Jordan Annable who finished from a deep Anstey free-kick.
Kieran Wells, known well by the Newark faithful, made it 2-0 after 70 minutes with a deflected header.
The final nail in the coffin came with minutes to play as Charlie Scanlon ran on to a loose ball and finished coolly.
Newark’s final Saturday league fixture takes place this weekend against Pinchbeck United FC (3pm kick-off) ahead of Wednesday night’s home clash against Selston FC (7.45pm kick-off).
At the time of press, a date is still yet to be confirmed for Newark’s Notts Senior Cup semi-final fixture against Mansfield Town.
Should they win, they would face Carlton Town, who beat Nottingham Forest under-23s 2-1 on Tuesday night.
A venue is yet to be confirmed.
