Notts Senior League Premier Division title clash ends 1-1 as Southwell City and Stapleford Town share the points

More than 200 supporters watched two title contenders go head to head at Brinkley as Southwell City played out a 1-1 draw with Stapleford Town on Saturday afternoon.

The result, which sees the sides remain level on points in the Notts Senior League Premier Division, despite Southwell playing a game less, was described as fair by City manager Jonny Upton.

City almost enjoyed the perfect start as Liam Moran had a golden chance after 23 seconds, but the forward misjudged his header following Tom Jackson’s cross.

Stapleford responded in the 25th minute, clipping the outside of the post.

In a five-minute spell before the break, City had a handful of big chances but failed to find the net on each occasion.

And they were punished at the start of the second half as Surafel Tefera ran clear and dinked over Ryan Fletcher.

Upton’s side responded immediately through Blair Bryant’s header, but the defender was judged to be offside, with footage since proving the decision to be incorrect.

City equalised on the 76th minute through captain Chris Bowles, who scored from the spot after a foul on Matty Newton.

Bryant then hit the bar, again with a header, with ten minutes to play.
