Newark Hockey Club has been awarded a grant of £1,350 from Newark and Sherwood District Council to support its academy project.

The academy was started to develop young hockey players in the Newark area and is available to under-19 boys and girls.

The first year was by invitation as the project was being developed, but over the summer the club is looking to expand the sessions available.

The academy is run by Sally Davies and Paul Halfpenny, who are level two and level three qualified coaches respectively.

Young leaders and umpires are also encouraged to come down to develop their skills.

“We have seen great success with our under-15 boys and girls’ teams who are both part of evening leagues,” said Davies.

“These youngsters are the future of Newark Hockey Club and we would like to see the profile of the club raised to a much higher level so that we can support and keep the talented players within the Newark club.”

With Newark Hockey Club’s ladies 1st XI’s promotion chase back on track, it was important to ensure all three points against Redhill on Saturday, but the visitors had other ideas as their young players kept possession for long periods early on.

Newark opened the scoring against the run of play on ten minutes when a breathtaking 50m run by player of the match Hannah Coe resulted in a goalbound shot, and top scorer Luce Brailsford was on hand to divert the ball home.

Coe was once again provider for the second goal on 17 minutes. Redhill had no answer to her pace and trickery as she tore into the heart of the visiting defence and a neatly disguised reverse pass found the oncoming Sarah Pask, who netted to double the home team’s advantage.

The dynamic Pask then turned provider for new signing Trish Trafford to add number three on 21 minutes.

The second half was much the same story, with Newark camped in the Redhill half, and goals followed from Brailsford — her 15th of the season — and Pask as Newark ran out 5-0 winners to strengthen their third place in the Notts Premier League.
