Praise from Newark coach for players despite fifth successive loss

Coach Paul Halfpenny praised his young players as Newark gave Tamworth a scare.

Newark lost for the fifth match in a row, 2-1, but the final result was far closer than some of their recent encounters.

Halfpenny said: “Heaps of praise for the entire team as they gave everything they could to take something from the game.

“The young players in their first season are starting to make a difference so, with a full strength team next week, we can hope for more points from our final four games.”

The task was an uphill struggle before the game had started with captain Becky Warner, vice-capatain Laura Donaldson, and Emily Sanderberg unavailable.

Shanade Orsmond and Megan Cocker made their first-team debuts.

Newark started strongly and pushed Tamworth back, pressing to open the scoring, but couldn’t find the all-important first goal.

Tamworth soon took control and keeper Molly Usborne continued her fine form with some excellent saves.

The visitors took the lead from open play and extended the advtange on 25 minutes.

Newark regrouped at half-time and came out fighting and were rewarded with a Millie Hill goal on 58 minutes.

Although the home side pressed for an equaliser, they couldn’t find the crucial goal.

Sam Smith scored with a decisive finish after a cut back from Nick Crouch in the first minute.

Atherstone were unable to compete as Crouch wreaked havoc on the defence, hitting a first-half hat-trick.

In the second-half, Newark were pushed back for a time but found their poise in the final quarter.

Sam Smith dribbled past four players before finishing confidently while Crouch added a fourth with a deft touch past the keeper.

Atherstone scored a consolation between Newark’s two second-half goals, but were otherwise shut out from the Newark circle for much of the game.

Notts Uni 2nds 5 Newark Ladies 2nds 1An improved second-half performance wasn’t enough as Newark were comfortably beaten.

After holding their opponents in the opening minutes, Notts Uni scored following a melee in the D.

Newark bounced back quickly and created chances, Becky Wells using her pace on the left wing to great effect.

They almost equalised when Shanade Orsmond struck wide but Notts scored three times before the break to take the game away from the visitors.

Newark defended strongly in the second-half and got a deserved goal when Ann Crockett-McLean’s shot slipped through the keeper’s leg, allowing Becky Wells to sweep the ball into the net.

The last goal of the game was scored by the university team.

Newark Mens 2nds 6 Tamworth 2nds 2A brace from Andy Smith set Newark on their way to a comfortable victory.

After going behind to an early goal, Smith scored twice and Simon Higgs added a penalty flick.

Smith had the chance to complete his hat-trick with a penalty flick but his effort was saved by the keeper.

Newark looked to keep the tempo high in the second-half and continued to pressure Tamworth.

They scored when Oli Phillips controlled a waist-high ball with his back to goal and, after letting it drop to the floor, placed it inside the near post.

Matt Banfield added a fifth before Tamworth scored a second goal against the run of play.

John Reynolds completed the scoring with a trademark strike from a short corner.

Atherstone 3rds 0 Newark Mens 3rds 8Despite three first-half injuries, Newark dismantled their opponents with a ruthless display in which four players scored two each.

Oliver Ratcliffe scored twice in the first-half before he was replaced after taking a stick to the ankle.

Andy McMunn and Joe Carrington were also forced off before the break.

The changes didn’t stop Newark and they scored six second-half goals with two each from Josh Dent, Arran Coggan and Adam Lefley.

South Notts 1 Newark Ladies 3rds 10Five goals from Sophie Chambers helped Newark to victory.

Newark had trouble breaking their opponents down but Susie Gray scored the opener to settle nerves.

South Notts equalised against the run of play, but Vicky McMunn struck just before the break to restore Newark’s advantage.

In the second-half, Chambers adding five goals while Louise Goodman and Laura McMunn added one each as Newark reached double figures.
