Southwell City continued club-record winning-run as they beat Wollaton 2-1 in the Notts Senior League Premier Division
Southwell City extended their club-record winning-run to 16 matches on Saturday.
The 2-1 Notts Senior League Premier Division win over Wollaton also extended their unbeaten run to 21 matches and moved them within three points of the leaders Sandiacre Town, who have played four matches more than them.
Southwell manager Jonny Upton said it was a poor performance from his side, despite winning the ‘all-important’ three points.
“They went down to ten and we were awful,” he said.
“It was a poor performance, but we get the all-important three points.”
Southwell almost took the lead in the 11th minute through forward Fraser Bricknell, who was denied a goal when one-on-one with the ‘keeper after breaking through by bravely winning the ball with his head.
In the 22nd minute, Bricknell was inches away from Will Stocks’ free-kick with the goal at his mercy.
Stocks’ set-pieces continued to cause the visitors problems into the second half and, after 51 minutes, he forced an own goal from his corner as the Wollaton ‘keeper struggled to punch clear and bundled the ball into his own net.
By the 60th minute it was 2-0 as defenders Blair Bryant and Fenn Radford linked up.
The latter kept a deep free-kick in play for the former, who found the back of the net with an overhead kick.
Luke Smith was then shown a straight red for a late challenge on Southwell’s Matthew Newton.
The ten men pulled one back in the 80th minute through Kyle William Crofts and offered a late scare with a last-minute free-kick, but the set-piece didn’t beat the City wall.
On Saturday, Southwell are in Senior Cup action as they travel to Division One side Ruddington Village.
