Newark Rowing Club travel to Nottingham City and Nottingham Club Regattas
All four squads from Newark Rowing Club travelled across to the Nottingham City and Nottingham Club Regattas at the weekend.
The Nottingham City Regatta took place on Saturday over 2,000m at the National WaterSports Centre at Holme.
Newark had 11 crews race, the first of which was Lucas Bowes in the J18 Single Sculls. He finished in fourth place in his first multi-lane singles race.
The women’s junior 18 quadruple scull of Emma Joy, Georgina Joy, Lucy Jarvis and Molly Joyce also finished fourth behind crews from Kingston Grammar School and St George’s School, Weybridge.
The junior 16 quadruple scull of Charles Russell, Jack Norsworthy, Ed Lee and Theo Cadby raced in the open event, coming third behind top university crews from Loughborough and Gloucester Hartpury.
Connie Ferrer and Neve Woodman, in the debut race in senior women’s coxless pairs, won the event by 18 seconds over the second place crew from De Montfort University.
The pairing went on to finish in second place in the women’s junior 18 coxless pairs, missing out by just under a length.
James Gleed and Jesse Hole took a strong win in the junior 16 double sculls.
The club’s double scull success continued in the lightweight women’s event, with Lucy Owens and Maisie Archer-Dytch battling the headwind to take their first win in the lightweight category.
Ashley Cowley and Dan Jones built on their strong weekend in Ghent to finish second in the open double sculls, behind a crew made up of members of the Great Britain team.
The last race of the day for Newark was in the women’s quadruple scull.
The crew of Jill Ashley, Andrea Woodhead, Cathay Gilespie and Helen Keating came in fourth place in a strong field.
The Nottingham Masters and Club Regatta took place on Sunday over 1,000m.
Newark Rowing Club placed a massive entry of 27 crews into the regatta, with multiple boats from every squad competing.
The senior men’s squad were the most successful of the day, collecting the most wins for the club.
The combination of Oliver Robertson, Andy Hare, Ashley Cowley and Dan Jones took strong wins in the open coxed fours and open quadruple sculls.
Cowley and Jones also won the open coxless pairs and open double sculls.
The Masters F crew (60-65 age group) of Chris Bates, Nigel Wallis, Tom Woodman and Ian Walter beat a highly-competitive crew from Sunderland Rowing Club to take the event win.
The two Newark crews then combined to win the open eights, coxed by Phoebe Loach-Martin, by three lengths of clear water ahead of the crew from Derby Rowing Club.
The junior women continued their strong form this season.
Emma Joy won the women’s junior 18 single sculls with younger sister Georgina Joy winning the women’s junior 15 single sculls event.
The new crew of Molly Joyce, Millie Lyons, Maisie Maltby and Lucy Jarvis took a commanding win over Oundle School in the women’s junior 17 quadruple sculls.
The senior women’s crew of Andrea Woodhead, Helen Keating, Jane Hindmarsh and Cathy Gilespie continued their strong form into the masters D coxless fours event, making the A final and finishing in a close third place.
James Gleed and Will Lees took the first junior boys win of the day in the junior 15 double sculls.
Gleed went on to win the junior 17 single sculls, competing two age groups up.
Harry Woodman and Tom McDermott won their first ever race in the junior 13 double sculls after rowing through a crew from the Nottingham and Union Boat Club.
The final wins of the day came from brothers Graham and Nigel Price in the masters F double sculls and coxless pairs.
Head coach Ashley Cowley commented: “I can’t tell you how proud I am of the club this weekend.
“Seventeen wins across a regatta weekend is definitely a record high in recent years and the fact that it is coming from all squads and members is excellent.”
Club president Chris Bates said: “This result is a true testament to the culture we have in the club at the moment.
“I am excited to see what our juniors can do at the National Schools Regatta next week and how our senior crews continue to prep for the Henley regattas later this year.”
