Sam White Cup sees 12 schools compete in contest and South Notts Hockey team gets a bronze medal in the sevens
The Sam White Cup took place again this year as it has done since 2014 with Newark Hockey Club president Tim Burch organising the event.
The competition saw 12 teams taking part from across the district at the Magnus Astro with around 120 school students participating.
Farndon were crowned the winner this year with Isaac Thackeray of Lowe's Wong school being declared the player of the tournament.
Teachers, coaches, and the Magnus sports leaders gathered together to decide who would be awarded the honour.
Issac was presented with the trophy which consists of one of Sam White's hockey sticks displayed in a case.
Farndon managed to pip Bleasby in a very close game that went to penalty shuffles.
Bleasby had won the league this season with Farndon coming runners up.
However, it was Farndon's day to lift the trophy on this occasion.
Sam was a lover of the game of hockey who played and coached the sport.
He died from a brain tumour in 2013.
Before his death, he campaigned for better awareness and treatment of the illness.
Following his death, the Sam White Legacy was established to continue his work.
Elsewhere, the South Notts women's team managed to achieve a bronze medal in a hockey sevens competition.
The Redhill Ladies 7s county-wide summer league was at the Redhill ground at Goosedale Farm, Papplewick.
There were different participating teams for the Tuesday and Thursday evening games.
The two winners of the Tuesday League — North Notts from Mansfield, and Boots, met the two winners of the Thursday League — South Nottingham from Bingham and Trent Vale from Wollaton, in the finals day.
South Notts were hoping for a good run in the competition after dominating their lea-gue and winning last season.
They put their best foot forward with a strong team.
The South Notts side consisted of captain Eleanor Wallace, vice-captain Freya Beaumont, Rose Cartwright, Ruby Ryan, Liz Foster, Sophie Atkinson, Samantha Markwick, Rachael Grupping, Gemma Robinson, and Sophie Runciman.
Trent Vale won the event with North Notts taking silver.
“The team's consistency and skills were awe-inspiring," said the side's captain Eleanor Wallace.
"The matches were tough but it was a fair result all around.”
