Season ends on high note
Souchwell Brincliffe United Ladies Hockey Club will be playing in the Midlands League next season after their 1st XI won promotion in the final game of the season.
The match against Redhill 1st XI at Bingham Leisure Centre saw two early goals from Southwell.
The first came 20 minutes into the game from Jackie Key, followed shortly after by the another from Judith Grainger.
Going in at half-time with a 2-0 lead, Southwell were determined to end the league season with a convincing win ahead of the cup final on Sunday.
Captain Hannah Wraith scored three goals in quick succession for yet another hat-trick to cement her position as Southwell’s leading goal scorer.
Judith Grainger was on target for a second time for Southwell’s final goal.
But player of the match was Carol Baker for her outstanding goalkeeping performance.
The 6-0 result meant the league champions ended the season on 49 points, with 16 wins and 93 goals.
The team has the chance to cap their season in style with a cup final against West Bridgford Monarchs 1st XI on Sunday.
The game will be played at Highfields in Nottingham.
Southwell Brincliffe 2nd XI lost 4-2 against Beeston 2nd XI on Saturday.
Southwell’s Caroline Milns equalised after the team had conceded but they were 2-1 down by half-time.
Beeston scored a third early in the second half but Southwell clawed one back through Judith Grainger after a great passing move with Milns.
Beeston scored again with only a few minutes left to seal the defeat.
The second team played their final league game the following day against Nottingham Highfields IIIa.
After a goal-less first half, a short corner saw captain Julie Brodsky strike straight at goal to give Southwell the lead.
Another short corner routine resulted in Libby Kirkham deflecting in a Rachel Kemp shot to complete a 2-0 win.
The second team finished the league season in fourth place in Notts Women’s Hockey League Division One, separated only by goal difference from third place Nottingham University 3rd XI.
Southwell Brincliffe 3rd XI beat Arnold 1-0 in their final league match of Notts Women’s Hockey League Division Two.
The victory secured them third place in the league, having only been promoted from Division Three this season.
The winning goal for Southwell came late in the second half courtesy of Libby Kirkham.
A clean sheet was secured thanks to Jane Stead having an excellent game in goal.
The third team play on Sunday in the Shield Competition final.
