Newark Hockey Club’s men’s 2nd XI returned to the top of East Midlands Division Two with a 3-2 win against promotion rivals Leicester University on Saturday.

The game was evenly matched but Leicester opened the scoring with a goal from open play. Newark had several chances through penalty corners and the third one was converted by Robin Lowth.

Once again Leicester scored and could have increased their lead but Nathan Wakeland made crucial saves.

At the other end, captain Arran Coggan saw two efforts saved on the line, and Lowth and Matt Hammond had shots saved by the goalkeeper.

Newark equalised when Littlewood crossed to Hammond who struck a spectacular goal.

In the second half, it was left to Littlewood to create an opening for Jason Feehily to score the decider.

Newark men’s 1st XI just managed a 3-2 away win against Loughborough Town.

It took five minutes before Newark moved ahead when Adam Henfrey smartly distributed the ball to Benny Brown who scored.

Newark were later awarded their first penalty corner and the goalkeeper was beaten by a drag flick from Jules Williams to make it 2-0.

On the brink of half time Newark added their third with a penalty flick from Henfrey.

After the break missed chances for Newark resulted in quick counter-attacking by Loughborough who reduced the lead and then scored from a penalty flick.

Newark Ladies’ 1sts won 4-1 against Redhill. Newark had the majority of possession in the first half but it remained goalless.

Newark then surprised Redhill when the first goal came from Jemma Gough. Minutes later Hannah Coe doubled the lead and Luce Brailsford scored another.

Redhill then scored but Newark finished with a further goal from Brailsford.

Newark Ladies’ 2nd XI returned to the top of the Notts League Division Two with a 3-0 win against Nottingham Trent University.

All three goals came from short corner routines in the first half. The scorers were Jemma Gough (2) and Sarah Pask.

Newark Ladies’ 2nd XI then followed this up with a 2-1 win against Boots 2nds.

Pask opened the scoring with an excellent strike. Boots kept up the pressure and equalised just before half time.

In the second half Gough gave Newark the lead. The win puts Newark four points clear at the top of the table.

Newark Ladies’ 3rds lost 2-0 at division leaders Woodthorpe.

Southwell Brincliffe 1st XI scored 16 goals without reply against South Notts 1st XI.

Goals were by Helen Kirby (4) Hannah Wraith (4) Rachel Kemp (3) Judith Grainger (3) Jackie Key and Jane Bowles.

Southwell 2nd XI lost 3-1 against Boots 2nd XI. The teams both scored before half time, with Southwell’s goal coming from Rachel Kemp. Boots scored twice after the break.

Southwell 3rds won 2-1 in a tough match against Boots 3rds.

Karen Sanderson scored first for Southwell Brincliffe United but soon after Boots scored.

The winning goal came five minutes before the end through Sandra Taylor.

Southwell Under-11s played in a seven-a-side tournament at The Newark High School.

They had mixed results. The Southwell players were Libby Day, Joanna Thompson, Naomi Cottam, Millie Kirkpatrick, Holly Prentice, Elizabeth Bernhofs, Ella Hughes, Molly Earle and Emma Cundy.
