Showtime approaches for Tom Cowling and Newark’s pro boxers at Newark Showground

The biggest professional boxing show in the town’s history will take place this weekend — and Newark’s Tom Cowling says he is thankful to be headlining the event.

The show will be held in the Lady Eastwood Centre at Newark Showground, which can hold up to 1,500 people.

The card, promoted by Carl Greaves, will feature ten bouts.

Hometown middleweight Cowling (6-0-0) will top the bill alongside co-headliner and former English champion Dec Spelman, who makes his long-awaited return to the ring.

Undefeated Newark super lightweight Sonny Price will join the undefeated 25-year-old Cowling on the card.

Greaves’ stable of Stanley Stannard, Ben Vaughan and Liam Walsh will also be unleashed on the night.

Ben Lilley, James Richardson and Otis Lookham complete the line-up, alongside Grimsby debutant Kirsty Hill.

Greaves said: “It will be the biggest professional show there has ever been in the town.

“Last time out we had the Cedric Ford Pavilion booked, but we are going bigger this time so we are moving up to the Lady Eastwood Pavilion.

“It will be a great night with a stacked card.”

Greaves also spoke up the form of Cowling.

“He has been looking good,” he said.

“I am confident Tom will be approaching 10-0 by the end of the year.

“I want him to be in a position where he is pushing for a title.”

Last time out, Cowling topped the bill at the Cedric Ford Pavilion and put away Kyle Hughes inside three rounds.

With just days left until fight night, Cowling, who faces his second six round bout, said: “Training camp has gone according to plan.

“I’ve been getting plenty of rounds in sparring with some good fighters.

“I am very thankful and fortunate to be fighting in my hometown, and often in front of my friends and family.

“As always, the support will be great on the night.

“If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.”

Doors open at 6pm on Saturday with the first bell expected at 7pm.
