Coddington and Winthorpe 1sts fall to defeat against East Bridgford in the South Notts League Division H cricket league

Coddington and Winthorpe’s 1st XI were looking to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season, but it was always a big ask at top-of-the-league East Bridgford, writes Joshua Mee.

It did seem that an upset was on the cards, as an East Bridgford wicket fell on the second ball of the game in the South Notts League Division H.

From then on, however, the game went the way of the batting side as East Bridgford effortlessly accumulated the runs. A composed innings from Ameer Shah (51) allowed the rest of his teammates to score around him, forming the foundation for the score.

A massive final over from the lower order took their score to 208.

Jake Warrener was the pick of the Coddington and Winthorpe bowlers, taking 4-38.

In reply, Coddington & Winthorpe’s batting innings started with a four but ended the opening over with the loss of a wicket, and two more fell in quick succession leaving the side on 12-3.

After a lengthy rain delay, Ewan Butterfield batted well to make 45, but fell at a key moment, leaving the team 100-6 after 25.

From then on it was about trying to take as many bonus points as possible, with Jake Warrener (37) and Josh Jones (34*) taking the away side to 178 off the 40 overs.

Butterfield said: “Losing three early wickets always put us on the back foot and we always felt two wickets behind the game from then on.”

Coddington & Winthorpe 1sts have no game at the weekend, but the 2nds take on Midlands 4th XI at Holme Lane after a defeat at the weekend to Bingham 4ths.
