RAF Golfing Society compete in their annual summer meeting at Newark Golf Club




Forty Five members of a military group were out on the fairways playing golf in their annual summer meeting at a golf club in the area.

The RAF golfing society were at Newark Golf Club for the event which saw good competition from its members.

Club spokesman Roger Carr said that the society holds seven meetings every year and that they always enjoyed getting out to Newark.

Garry Ridsdale won the scratch competition for the Denys Field Scratch Cup which was first presented in 1946 in memory of Denys Field who was a talented RAF golfer who died in the Second World War.

Tom Hanlon won the Handicap competition for the National Playing Fields Cup which was first presented in 1932.

Naomi Bedford won the Ladies Cup.

Tony Bhullar and Gordon Varley won the Greensomes competition for the Sassoon Cups which goes back to 1939.

Sheila Grant won the Pru Riddiford Bowl for the best score by a lady who has served in the RAF.

Pru Riddiford for whom the trophy is named was the daughter of the first Secretary of the society and was the Sussex Ladies Champion for 12 years.

Carr added that the society was formed in 1921, originally known as the RAF Officers Golf Association.

In 1945 the society reformed under its present title and was then open to all ranks, serving and retired.

They now have 400 members including 30 members currently serving in the RAF.

Past members include two Open Champions, Henry Cotton and Dick Burton.

A host of former members have also played in the Ryder Cup such as Max Faulkner, Jimmy Adams, Charlie Ward, Peter Alliss, John Jacobs, Peter Mills & Tom Haliburton.

The club has also had many members play in the Amateur Walker Cup and the ladies' Curtis Cup against the USA.

65 RAF golfers have won international caps, 172 have won national or international events, and no less than 320 have been County Champions.
