Farndon cricket club set solid foundation as leaders just get over the line
Leaders Farndon 1sts held their nerve to get over the line by eight runs against Kimberley Institute 3rds in South Notts League Division D on Saturday.
Opting to bat first, openers Martyn Hill (33) and Jason Lam (61) provided a solid foundation as they put on 58 for the first wicket.
That allowed Dan Collington to contribute a quickfire 25, which included two sixes and then Sam Brown weighed in with an unbeaten 54 at the end of the innings. Sam Hill finished 22 not out as Farndon posted 250-5 in 45 overs, Ewan Towle the pick of the bowlers with 2-43.
Kimberley captain and opener Alex Johnson made 43 but their solid start quickly faded as Collington (2-9 in five overs) helped reduce them from 63-1 to 90-5.
However, Zail Gill (40) combined with Daniel Cole to help Kimberley to 167-6. Cole found support from Cole Close (24) but they couldn’t get their side across the line despite the former finishing on 79 not out from 70 balls.
John Esam finished with 3-55 while there were also two wickets apiece for Andrew Lamb (2-67) and Nathan Oldbury (2-48).
Southwell 1sts were skittled out for just 95 at Cavaliers and Carrington as they lost by 102 runs.
Cavaliers recovered from 20-2 thanks to half-centuries by Zahir Ahmed (53) and Osama Aijaz (54). That helped the hosts to 197-9 in 45 overs after winning the toss, Steve Wright (3-37) and Josh Evans (3-41) both impressing with the ball.
Southwell’s top three all got to double figures, opener Tom Clarke top-scoring on 25 and skipper Jonathan Butler making 22. But wickets tumbled quickly lower down the order as they slipped from 63-2 and 85-4 to 95 all out in less than 29 overs.
Just two bowlers weaved their magic to halt Southwell’s chase, Ahmed Ali taking 6-24 and Muhammad Abu Bakkar picking up 4-39.
