Nineteen-time champion jockey AP McCoy will compete Southwell Racecourse today, for what could be the final time before he retires.

The 40-year-old announced his decision to call time on an incredible career at the end of the season earlier this month.

He has competed at Southwell plenty of times in the past, and local fans will get chance to see the star in action for possibly the last time in the area on Sunday.

General manager Mark Clayton said: “We are delighted to welcome AP to Southwell for what could be the last time before he retires at the end of this season.

“He has ridden numerous winners here like all Jumps courses, but I think our and possibly his most abiding memory of visiting Southwell will be the occasion in January 2002 when he remounted hot favourite Family Business to win after all other runners had failed to finish.”

On that occasion McCoy's mount went down with a circuit to go and five horses still in the race.

But all five subsequently either fell, refused or unseated their rider.

That prompted McCoy to leap back on Family Business and enjoy an unchallenged ride to the finish line

In the last five seasons McCoy has notched up a 30% strike-rate at the course and is set to partner three horses at the track on Sunday.

Racing begins at 2pm this afternoon, and tickets can be booked for £12 here at www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk/whats-on/fixture/22-february-2015/ or buy on the gate.
