Sporting clubs and organisations around the area have expressed their condolences over the death of Sergeant Graham Saville.
The Nottinghamshire Police officer sadly died yesterday (August 29) after being seriously injured while saving the life of a distressed man on the railway near Newark.
Sergeant Saville was a father, and also a football coach in his spare time.
"It is with great sadness to inform the football community of the tragic death of Ravenshead Reds under-11s coach Graham Saville on Tuesday 29th August 2023," read a statement from Notts FA.
"Ravenshead Reds FC have paid tribute to a lovely man, a respected coach and friend to everyone at the club.
"Whilst Graham’s death is a huge loss to Ravenshead Reds it is nothing in comparison to the loss felt by Graham’s loved ones.
"Graham was a great role model who volunteered his time so children could play football.
"Ravenshead Reds FC and Nottinghamshire Football Association would like to express their deepest condolences to Graham Saville’s family, friends and colleagues in both the Police and football communities.
"Such sad news," said a spokesman from Newark Town Football Club. "From all of us at the club we send our thanks for Sgt Graham Saville’s service.
"We also send our condolences and our thoughts to his loved ones left behind."
Newark and Sherwood United also passed on their condolences with a spokesman saying: "The Highwaymen send our thoughts to the loved ones and colleagues of Newark-based Police Officer, Sergeant Graham Saville, who sadly lost his life in the line of duty."
A fundraising page has been set up to support Graham’s family:
Ravenshead Reds have asked that the football community hold a minute’s silence during matches played across Nottinghamshire over the coming days as a mark of respect for Graham.
