Newark & Sherwood United manager Romaine Graham gives approval to proposals for a new £1.5million ground in the town
Manager Romaine Graham is excited by Newark & Sherwood’s proposals for a new ground in the town.
The Highwaymen have unveiled plans for a £1.5m stadium, built entirely from reused shipping containers.
A 3D model went on display last weekend at Harrowby FC, where United currently play their home matches.
The club haven’t announced an exact location for the stadium, which will include 500 seats, but it feels a step closer after fans were able to view the model.
“This would be massive for Newark,” said Graham. “There’s nothing else like it in the area.
“This is our fourth year on the road now but to see the visual representation makes it feel a lot closer.
“It shows things are happening in the background. The stadium is very impressive.
“I don’t think it will be rivalled, certainly at this level, and a few steps higher as well. It’s going to be really impressive.
“You try to assess performances this season and I do think we should be higher in the table than we are.
“But sometimes in the winter months, you need something to hang on to.
“We’re down in Harrowby, where the attendances haven’t been the best, but if you’ve got your own home and fans to give you a boost, it’s a big help.
“You can see what that’s doing for Newark Town at the minute.
“I think we’ve missed that at times this season.
“It’s good for the players to see what we’re trying to do.
“It’s certainly made me think a bit more as well and I definitely want to be a part of it.
“It’s helped refocus my thought process.”
Graham believes there are also floating football supporters in Newark who would be more inclined to watch the Highwaymen if they’re playing locally.
“You’ve got a few that go between the two clubs,” he said. “More head to Newark Town because they’re closer.
“We had a large fanbase before we disbanded from Newark Flowserve and we expect we can get those guys back, especially if we’re doing well and playing good football.”
