Southwell City chairman John Cunningham details promotion hopes and progress at Brinkley ahead of Clifton clash

Subject to final approvals, Southwell City are four points away from winning the league and bringing step six football to Brinkley next season.

City sit top of the Notts Senior League Premier Division following a 4-0 win of FC Sez on Saturday, three points clear of both second-placed Keyworth United — who have played all 30 of their league fixtures — and Stapleford Town, who have two games to play.

Southwell have three league games to play.

Tonight, they host Clifton All Whites, knowing a win could all but secure top spot.

Southwell chairman John Cunningham said he was delighted with the progress of the club both on and off the pitch in what has been a transformational year for the club.

“You have to apply to move up to step six so it is not as straightforward as it initially seems,” said Cunningham.

“We have passed the ground grading, so we are in a great position to be promoted should we finish in the right position and then get accepted.

“The aim for us is to finish top, and then get promoted that way. You’d hope it would be straightforward.

“We have been really busy both on and off the pitch.

“To see the progress at Brinkley, from what it was, to what it is now, is fantastic.

“The first team are enjoying playing there and we are getting good crowds — it is becoming the home we really hoped it would be.”

The club has one final hurdle should they get the business done on the field, which will require work over the summer.

“And that big hurdle is floodlights, which is an investment the club needs to make,” said Cunningham.

“We have passed the step six ground grading on the understanding that the floodlights will be there come the beginning of next season.”

On the pitch, Cunningham said the target was clear.

“We are not taking anything for granted because the next three games are all very tricky,” he said. “We will celebrate once we’ve officially done it.”

This Saturday, Southwell host Dunkirk.
