Showdown at the Showground show sees Chad Sugden beat Serhii Ksendzov on points; Tom Cowling also wins along with Levi Giles and Liam Walsh
Local favourite Chad Sugden stole the show on a big night of boxing at a packed-out Newark Showground on Saturday.
Sugden moved to 15-3-1 with an impressive points victory over Serhii Ksendzov, a late replacement for the injured Zdenko Bule.
The Newark light-heavyweight didn’t allow the change of opponent to affect his performance, even though Ksendzov was a completely different proposition with an awkward and tricky style.
Sugden, 30, took control from the start, landing some eye-catching shots in the first round.
As the rounds progressed, he got better and better, landing ferocious body shots which hurt his opponent.
The game plan was to break Ksendzov down and try and stop him in the later rounds.
Sugden pushed the pace and increased the intensity and had his opponent reeling as he hit the canvas.
The referee could have stepped in during the final round of six as Ksendzov fell into him but he made it to the final bell.
It was the stand-out fight on the Showdown at the Showground bill, organised by Dean Sugden, of Newark ABC, and promoter Carl Greaves.
The pair, working together for the first time, teamed up to provide the town’s boxing fans with a night to remember.
“To say it was a success is an understatement, with a very slick and well-run event and some amazing performances,” said Dean. “The start of our new partnership for myself and Carl had its challenges.
“But a problem shared is a problem halved and it made promoting a much more enjoyable experience.
“It is great for the town and boxing and we look forward to working together for many more years to come.”
There was another dominant performance from Newark super-middleweight Tom Cowling.
The 28-year-old beat Grimsby opponent Tom Ramsden on points after six rounds, boosting his pro record to 14-1.
Other bouts saw Levi Giles (15-2-1) beat Lee Hallett (2-85-4) on points and Liam Walsh (8-0-2) beat Jordan Grannum (12-154-5) on points.
Ryan Williams made it three wins from three after beating Joe Hardy (3-30) on points. Paddy Walsh (6-0) beat Naeem Ali (3-137-1) on points and Jason Myers (2-0) beat Ryan Labourn (0-28-2) on points.
