Lewis Chambers becomes the record goalscorer for Newark Town surpassing Simon Ellison as he now sits on 115 goals from 95 games




An emphatic Newark Town celebrated their captain Lewis Chambers surpassing the club goal-scoring record, at home against Dunkirk during a 5-1 victory in Division One, of the United Counties League.

Over 150 people witnessed Chambers pass the record after going into the match on an equal 113 goals, tied with previous record holder Simon Ellison.

Ellison achieved the feat on October 20th, 2012, more than a decade ago — managing the achievement in 153 appearances.

The previous record holder passed on his well wishes to Chambers.

“Many congratulations to Lewis Chambers on becoming Newark Town’s highest goal scorer,” said Elison.

“I wish him every success in his future footballing career.”

Chambers is now sitting on 115 goals in 95 appearances. and is looking to reach 200 goals in the future.

The captain hit a lovely goal early in the second-half before striking a penalty in the 80th minute to get his second of the match.

Chambers has previously expressed his love for the club and stated one of his objectives is to give back as much as possible.

Straight after the game, the club held a presentation ceremony where club officials, players, and fans gathered around to pay tribute to their captain’s achievement.

First team chairman Tony Joynes provided Lewis with a framed jersey from the club to commemorate the occasion.

Many messages of support and congratulations have come in from around the club.

“He’s a fantastic role model to any youngster,” said Tony Joynes.

“The club is so delighted for Lewis achieving this accolade,” said club Vice Chairman Sarah Robinson.

“It was great to see him then hit the penalty in the final minutes and it was charged with a little extra emotion that he smashed it in front of our loyal, Newark supporters.

“You couldn’t beat the atmosphere, it was a moment in time that you can’t manufacture.

“The outpouring of pride from the players and the wider club community towards Lewis hitting this landmark number of goals was so evident to see.

“At the end of the match, Aston, Lewis’s young son ran over to me and was delighted his dad got his record-breaking goal.

“That’s what it’s all about.

“Newark football at its very best, congratulations captain.”

“What an achievement for him, we are so privileged to have him at our club,” said committee member Craig Mountney.

“He is the perfect role model, with his attitude, commitment, work rate, professionalism, and above all else his Loyalty being second to none.

“Chambo is so approachable by all, he will give his time to anyone and he is a great advert for our Club.”

“Here’s to many more goals for Chambo.”

Fellow players also chimed in with their congratulatory messages.

“It is a fantastic achievement for him, he is a player who is still young,” said teammate Alex Hales.

“He is a perfect goal scorer, achieving week in and week out.

“Here’s to the next hundred, up the Chambo.”

“Lewis is a great ambassador for Newark football,” said goalkeeper Nathan Burrows.

“He is a local lad who has helped put Newark Town on the map in recent years through his ability to connect with local people on and off the pitch.

“Lewis’s commitment levels have given him the platform to reach this achievement and be a regular each week.

“On top of all that, he’s a smashing bloke and will do as much as he can to help people.

“He’s giving back to the community through his coaching business and has become a player feeder to the Newark Town kids section.”

“It was only a matter of time before Chambo would get his record,” said Newark Town’s Ben Sharpe.

“He’s one of the most dedicated and committed players and captains I’ve played with and an all-round great striker.

“It’s a very well-deserved record and I’m sure he’ll go on to score many more goals for the town.”

Chambers’ manager Luke Parsons said he can’t wait to see Chambers add to his total.

“Ever since I brought him to the club, he has been a pleasure to manage.

“Lewis always leads by example, he does all the hard work most strikers don’t want to do and is a ferocious finisher.”
