Rob Currell takes a look back at the season that was in Newark and district football
It has been a memorable football season across the district with many great highlights and some sad news as well.
The Advertiser looks back at some of the pivotal moments of the senior game across your area.
In their inaugural season as a rebranded club, Jonathan D’Laryea’s Newark and Sherwood United side brought the Notts Senior Cup back to Newark for the first time in over half a century.
They defeated a Carlton Town team who had won the cup five times in eleven years, by 3-2.
Their cup campaign also saw them defeat a Nottinghamshire Forest side 2-0 in front of more than 1,000 people at Station Road, Collingham.
The side had a 13 game unbeaten run and went 496 minutes without conceding a goal.
The Blue Army was easily one of the standouts of the season as the Newark Town Ladies dominated the district scene in women's football.
Not only did they go through the second division of the Nottinghamshire Girls and Ladies League undefeated, they put nearly 100 goals on the board in 13 matches and the side contained five of the top ten goal scorers in the competition.
They also won their league cup final 2-1 against a formidable Nottingham Trent University outfit.
It was a difficult season for Ollerton Town as they went through several managers, including the departure of Steve Bodle who left with most of the first team to Shirebrook Town.
Battered and bruised, the reserves resigned from their competition and were brought up to play as the first team.
The club went on to an 11-match losing streak that went back to when Bodle had the reins but continued long after he left.
Ollerton demonstrated true grit, resilience, and a sense of humor during their tough times that resonated with many watching from the outside.
It was a good season for Newark Town mens team in their inaugural step six season as they challenged for the play-offs, finishing fifth.
Captain Lewis Chambers beat the club's goalscoring record as he continues to average more than a goal a game. They were also responsible for arguably the goal of the season across the district thanks to George Asplin's goal.
Asplin’s effort against Dunkirk was an amazing feat as he struck the ball from beyond the halfway line, beating a surprised goalkeeper who was unable to stop the goal.
The Blues spirit shone through after they came together following the death of girls development lead and coach Mark Nesbitt.
In the Newark Alliance, Cal Barnes’ Rose and Crown won the Premier Division, while Marc Harvey’s Holy Trinity side lifted two cups during their season.
The Green Machine defeated the Premier Division champions in the Willie Hall Cup before winning the Notts FA Sunday Challenger Senior Cup a week later against Poets Young Boys.
There was further bad news during the season, with the untimely death of football stalwart and Basford United fan Malc Storer in January. The popular blogger was well-known around the grounds with his on-the-road blog being a much-used source of information for many football fans.
Southwell City championed the fact that they achieved their preseason goals this season.
Their first team survived their first step six season in the United Counties League, competing alongside Newark Town.
Their reserves side achieved promotion to step seven and their development side also took the next step up the ladder.
