Three first places against the best

Newark swimmers recorded three first places against some of the top clubs in the county in the Simeon Hansard Trophy Gala at Balderton’s Grove Leisure Centre.

Newark Swimming Club finished fourth in the first gala after the summer break, with Sherwood winning the Hansard Trophy, and Mansfield and Leander taking the second and third places respectively.

The three wins went to James Wathen in the open 50m freestyle in a personal best time of 25.99secs, Thomas Record in the 14-and-under 50m breaststroke in a personal best time of time of 34.67secs, and Will Betts in the open 50m backstroke in 31.31secs.

Four other swimmers also achieved personal bests on the night — Laura Crosby in the 14- and-under 50m backstroke (36.65secs); Andrew Sanger in the 14-and-under 50m backstroke (34.14secs); Simon Wathen in the 12-and-under 50m butterfly (38.27secs); and Benjamin Palmer in the 12-and- under 50m breaststroke (49.27 secs).
