Willie Hall Trophy : Trinity upset Premier side to reach last eight
In a thrilling finale First Division Holy Trinity cause a minor upset in the Willie Hall Cup second round, winning 4-3 at Premier Division East Bridgford Rangers.
Holy Trinity started the better and took the lead when Shane Tetley diverted Dave Rawlin’s effort past the keeper.
Prolific scorer Bassey Okon equalised before the break, finishing confidently from Damian Gacki’s precise chip into the box.
The visitors retook the lead on the hour when Rawlin’s corner was headed goalwards by Tetley and Dominic Kelly applied the finishing touch.
A third goal was added by Charlie Gibson as he scooped into the top corner from an improbable angle after a good pass from Ben Ginnelly.
East Bridgford piled on the pressure in search of a way back with debutant Adam Sinnott smashing a shot into the top corner from just outside the box.
They continued to press for an equaliser, but with two minutes remaining Holy Trinity broke quickly from a home corner and Jason Thurlby tapped into an empty net.
East Bridgford hit back again deep into injury time when Gacki curled a free-kick into the top corner.
The home side also had three appeals for handball turned down, but Holy Trinity hung on to advance into the quarter-finals.
A safe second-round passage was secured by RHP Social as they won 4-1 at home against Division One leaders Knowhow United.
Chris Self scored in the first-half for the home side, but Knowhow stayed in the tie thanks to good saves from keeper Dan Flatt.
In the second-half, Adam Boddy scored a tap-in after a good cross from Callum Barnes to double RHP’s advantage.
Harry Mills looped a shot over the keeper from 30 yards for the third.
Knowhow came close to pulling a goal back when a James Cooper header hit the post, before Ryan Ashley scored a fourth for RHP with another long-range effort.
A deserved consolation was scored late on by Aaran Needham, who converted from a free-kick.
Cup specialists Witham Wanderers advanced into the quarter-finals with a 4-1 victory at fellow Division One side Newark Cavaliers.
Wanderers, who have won just once in the league this season, pulled off the shock of the first round when they defeated Premier Division Newark Flowserve.
They produced another commanding performance in the second round and broke the deadlock when Nathan Arkle shot into the corner from 20 yards.
Wayne Martini doubled the advantage with a confident finish and Witham took a three-goal lead into the break when Adam Mella scored after an excellent team move.
Cavaliers rallied at the start of the second-half and pulled a goal back when a dangerous cross was turned into his own net by Gary Measures.
Substitute Connor Hudson put the result beyond doubt, however, when he converted a one-on-one opportunity.
Five second-half goals were scored by Walesby as they won 7-2 at Collingham to reach the next round.
James Munson and Mitchell Lee both scored twice, while Kris Scott, Richard Willett and Charlie Wormald completed the victory. Matthew Evans scored twice for Collingham.
In an all-Premier Division clash, Barkestone-le-Vale triumphed 5-3 at AFC Farnsfield.
Simon Duffy netted twice and Jake Boulton was also on the scoresheet for Farnsfield.
