The Invisible Man to be staged by Argent Theatre at The Buttermarket, Newark
The latest production by Argent Theatre gives audiences the chance to see The Invisible Man, as they have never seen him before.
The thought and advantages of invisibility is one that has captured the imagination since 1897, when the H.G. Wells novel was first published.
This new, fast-moving and funny adaptation for the stage by Derek Webb includes all the classic characters — Mrs Hall, the flirty pub landlady, the mercurial Mr Thomas Marvel, country medic Doctor Cuss, university mentor Professor Kemp and, of course, the titular character Mr Hawley Griffin — The Invisible Man.
But Argent Theatre’s version of the classic drama is staged with a twist — all 15 characters are played by only three actors.
Taking on task of performing all those roles are society regulars John Dodd and Tim McManus alongside Argent Theatre newcomer Adam Stringer.
While injecting a great deal of humour into the story this adaptation sticks broadly to the original plot of the H.G. Wells book.
Director Chantelle Thornley said: “The themes Wells explored in the 19th Century are still relevant today — faceless bankers mysteriously moving money invisibly, and people in society being ignored as if they are invisible.
“Expect humour, bordering on slapstick, pathos and, at times, downright macabre, cleverly fused to include the very dramatic and unsettling finale.
“The fate of The Invisible Man is a must see.”
The Invisible Man will be staged in the fully-enclosed prisoner exercise yard, with the former Newark Borough Police cells as the backdrop, in The Buttermarket, Newark.
Access to the venue is only available through the hosts Letsxcape Coffee House in the Market Place.
Performances take place on Sunday at 2.30pm, and Monday to Wednesday (October 23-26) at 7.30pm.
