Newark Choral Society to perform The Crucifixion, by John Stainer, at Hope Methodist Church, Barnbygate

A choral society is to welcome back some familiar faces for a performance of a classic Passiontide piece.

Newark Choral Society, under the baton of conductor Robert-John Edwards, will perform John Stainer’s The Crucifixion, this weekend.

The Crucifixion is one of the conductor’s favourite choral works, and he has directed the choir in not only learning the music to a high standard but to understand the text and setting.

Society chairman, Michael Wilson said: “This choral work is often performed at this time of year by many choirs, but it was last sung by Newark Choral Society in March 2014.

“Matt Jordan was our bass soloist then and I am delighted to welcome him again along with Matt Burton (tenor) who was one of our soloists in 2018 when the weather system “the beast from the east” nearly caused the concert to be cancelled.”

The concert will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 7.30pm, at Hope Methodist Church, Barnbygate.

The organist will be Dr Stephen Bullamore, of Newark Parish Church, who will also accompany the final two choruses of Handel’s Messiah.

Tickets are £12 and are available from newarkchoral628@gmail.com or from members of the society.
